The Umayyad Caliphate was the second major Caliphate that rose up since the death of Muhammed. — This Islamic Empire expanded rapidly to include much of northern Africa, western India, and Spain. At its peak, it was one of the largest empires in the history of the world.

The Dome of the Rock was constructed between 685 to 692 AD at the order of Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik, the second of the four major Caliphates since the death of Muhammad, during the Second Fitna on the site of the Second Jewish Temple, destroyed during the Roman Siege of Jerusalem in 70 AD.
