The Abbasid Caliphate was the third major Caliphate to reign since the death of Muhammed. — They ruled as Caliphs for most of the Caliphate from their capital in Baghdad in modern-day Iraq, after having overthrown the Umayyad Caliphate in the Abbasid Revolution of 750 AD. The early rule of the Abbasids was a time of scientific and artistic achievement. It is sometimes referred to as the Islamic Golden Age.
1258 AD – “The Beast (Islamic Caliphate) received a deadly wound” — In 1258, the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate was in Baghdad but was sacked by the Mongols and the leading caliph Al-Musta’sim was killed. The Islamic Caliphate had never been defeated since it rose up after the death of Muhammad in 632 until the Mongols invaded Baghdad and they received a deadly wound which lasted for 3 years.
1261 AD to 1517 AD – 256 years — the Abbasid Caliphate. “The deadly wound was healed” — In 1261, following the devastation of Baghdad by the Mongols, the Mamluk rulers of Egypt re-established the Abbasid Caliphate in Cairo. The first Abbasid Caliph of Cairo was Al-Mustansir. The Abbasid Caliphs in Egypt continued to maintain the presence of authority, but it was confined to religious matters as the Caliphate had little political power. The Abbasid Caliphate of Cairo lasted until the time of Al-Mutawakkil III who was Caliph from 1508 to 1516, and then again in 1517.
